Foundations of College Mathematics – BAC1

Foundations of College Mathematics is designed to provide the student with an overview of the fundamental concepts in mathematics which will prepare the student for the future study of mathematics at Western Governors University (WGU), specifically Finite Mathematics, College Algebra and Introduction to Probability and Statistics.

Throughout this course of study, the student will be completing activities designed to help them develop competence in cornerstone concepts, including arithmetic with fractions and signed numbers, introductory algebra and graphing, geometry in two and three dimensions, and probability and statistics. The student will go through whole numbers, fractions, decimals, ratios, proportions, percents, geometry, statistics, real numbers, equations, and graphing and gain competency in each area.

Course Competencies

  • Applying Basic Numeracy & Calculation Skills: The student utilizes the operations, processes, and procedures of basic numeracy and calculation skills to solve quantitative problems in arithmetic and basic algebra.
  • Basic Algebraic Skills: The student applies the operations, processes, and procedures of basic algebra to solve quantitative problems.
  • Basic Geometric Principles: The student utilizes the operations, processes, and procedures of basic geometry and measurement to solve problems in mathematics.
  • Basic Data Interpretation & Probability: The graduate evaluates quantitative data by interpreting statistical and graphic representations and solves basic probability problems.
