Netgate promised a version 2 book for everyone, but when they finally wrote it, they only gave it to commercial customers. The support forums? Packed with pfSense/Netgate fanboys who’ll rip you apart if you even hint that pfSense or Netgate isn’t perfect. Try pointing out bugs, and if you’re not a commercial customer, you’ll basically get told to get lost.
